Understanding Melt Value
Melt value is the worth of the pure precious metal inside a piece, based on today's spot price. It is calculated from three things: the weight, the purity (for example, 18K gold is 75% pure gold), and the live spot price per troy ounce.
A finished piece by a respected maker is almost always worth far more than its melt value. Craftsmanship, design, gemstones, condition, provenance and the maker's name all add value that the metal alone cannot capture. That is why we evaluate every piece individually.
Common Purities
- 24K gold: 99.9% pure
- 18K gold: 75% pure (stamped 750)
- 14K gold: 58.5% pure (stamped 585)
- Platinum: typically 95% pure (stamped 950 or PT950)
- Sterling silver: 92.5% pure (stamped 925)
